MY BOAT HARINAMA EXPERIENCE

During this Gaura Purnima, we asked several devotees to write about their Boat Harinama and Food for Life experience in Mayapur. Here is one letter we received, we humbly request more devotees to write! Suggestions for improvements are also welcome!

LETTER FROM TULSI-PRIYA DASI

Dear Shastra Prabhu

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I am glad you asked me to write something for your weblog,
in fact I had wanted to write something anyway! I have been to
Mayapur three times, and never have I had such a wonderful
experience there!

The chanting in the boat and all the way
was just so powerful – perhaps because it was in the Holy
Dhama, but I’m sure it was also because of the great enthusiasm
of the Harinama team you have. It is really nice that you
use a sound system with big speakers, with quality sound
(not the distorted rumble we often hear from public speakers
in India)……this is so important as the Holy Name pervades
the whole atmosphere and program.

Then of course the children in the village were sooo sweet,
and it was really heart-rendering to see how eager some people
are there just to get a plate of kichari, how they fight for it.
In fact I was shedding tears. Coming from a country
and background where I hardly ever see such type of hunger (USA),
it was a really soul-stirring experience. I think I can
understand a little of how Srila Prabhupada felt when
he saw the children fighting with the dogs for scraps
of food in Mayapur.

Thank you very much for inviting us on your program,
we wish you all the best with the great service you are doing
and we pledge our continuous support.

February Updates!

Coaching a soccer team to chant!
Soccer balls aside, time for prasadam!

This month has been really exciting – it is Gaura-Purnima time, we’ve had many enthusiastic visitors on our Harinama and FFL excursions, we added a new village to our list of regular Food for Life spots, and we distributed 19 large pots of
kichari this month (which is equal to 5 700 plates).

Gaura-Purnima time is always enlivening as devotees from all over the world visit Mayapur and they give us new enthusiasm with their joyous and enthusiastic participation in our programmes. This month HH Janardhana Goswami who is known for his wonderful kirtans and harinams joined us several times, and also accompanied us on our boat prasadam distribution program.

We were going down the Ganga by boat when we spotted a rather large crowd near the banks of the Ganga – we decided to stop there, and it turned out to be a local soccer match in a village. There was a large open field right next to the Ganga, a very nice spot for kichari distribution! The soccer players did not seem to mind when we placed our pots in one corner of the field, and soon in fact the whole soccer match was transformed into a harinama party! We were lucky – sometimes we do meet with aggressive or unfriendly people, or with Muslim people who do not welcome our prasadam always, but we were really welcome in this village! It turned out to be such a great spot that we re-visited it the very next week, and decided to add it to our list of regular spots. The village is called “Gauranga Sutar”.

We will also have a large FFL program as part of the Vyasa Puja celebrations of HH Bhakti Tirtha Swami this coming Thursday 5 March, please come if you are in Mayapur!

We wish to extend a heartfelt word of thanks to all our kind donors who made all these programs possible!
